Comedy-writer, actor, director and radio presenter. Merchant's broadcasting career began on Radio Warwick in the mid-1990s, after which he joined XFM in 1997 as Ricky Gervais's co-host. He collaborated with Gervais to create the award-winning comedy sitcoms The Office (2001-3) and Extras (2005-7). Film appearances include Hot Fuzz (2007) and The Invention of Lying (2009). Merchant co-wrote and directed the film Cemetery Junction with Gervais in 2010. Merchant and Gervais starred in the BBC TV series Life's Too Short (2011-13) alongside Warwick Davies.
