Rachel Whiteread
(1963-), ArtistSitter in 3 portraits
Trained at Brighton Polytechnic and the Slade, Whiteread is perhaps most famous for her concrete-cast House, which won her the Turner Prize in 1993. This was followed by a retrospective at Tate Liverpool in 1996-7, and representing England in the Venice Biennale in 1997. In 2001 she produced a clear resin cast of the inverted fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square. Her work explores memory, loss and remembrance, and often involves making casts of everyday objects or structures. She has a significant international reputation with major works in collections in the USA and Europe, including the Holocaust Memorial in Vienna which she designed. She was awarded a CBE in 2006.
