Born into a family of artists, Lucas at first trained as a wood-carver but soon turned to painting, studying at the St Martin's Lane Art School and the Royal Academy Schools. He was a constant exhibitor at the Academy from 1872, specialising in historical genre pictures. Equipped with a thorough knowledge of historical costume, Lucas was one of the most successful proponents of the vogue for seventeenth and eighteenth-century subjects, painting works such as After Culloden - Rebel Hunting (1884) and St. Paul's: the King's Visit to Wren (1888). He was also a portraitist and became a full Royal Academician in 1898.
