William Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland
(1649-1709), Friend and agent of William IIILater Stuart Portraits Catalogue Entry
Sitter associated with 5 portraits
An astute diplomat of noble Dutch birth, Bentinck was a friend of William of Orange with whom he fought alongside and nursed in illness. Before William's journey to England in 1688, he negotiated to preserve Holland from French attack during his absence. Having served the King faithfully in matters of foreign policy, he was lavishly rewarded with titles and privilege. His influence aroused much opposition and an unsuccessful attempt was made to impeach him in 1701.
