My grand-father, Sir Herbert Nicholls LLB, KB, KCMG was the longest serving 20th century Chief Justice of Tasmania (1914-1937)
He was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1868 and died in Hobart, Tasmania in 1940. He was, prior to becoming a judge, leader of the Parliamentary opposition, and was also attorney general. He received his Law articles, prior to a university course being offered and when it was offered, was one of the first six to complete his LLB at the University of Tasmania. He married Helen Sprent, the daughter and grand-daughter of two previous surveyor generals, in 1903 and had five children (2 boys, 3 girls). He was acting governor on three separate occasions, and served as both administrator and Lieutenant Governor for years when no one was appointed governor (in order to remain Chief Justice he did not become Governor.) He excelled in sport winning state-wide in Golf, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting and Royal Tennis.
