Rachel Meghan Markle was born in Los Angeles, California. She graduated with a double major in theatre and international studies from Northwestern University in Illinois where she also began acting. As well as having a successful career in American television, she also became involved in charity work involving women’s rights and social justice. In 2018 she married Prince Harry at St George's Chapel, Windsor and they became known as The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They have two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor. The Duke and Duchess announced that they were stepping back as senior members of The Royal Family in January 2020 and later settled in California. That same year they launched the Archewell organisation focusing on non-profit activities through the Archewell Foundation and creative media projects. The Duchess supports a number of charitable causes including raising awareness for women’s issues, social justice, the arts and animal welfare.
