This picture also appears at the front of the Reverend T. Horsfield's 2 volume work 'The History, Antiquities and Topography of the County of Sussex, 1835'. The sitter was an MP, Recorder of Harwich and a Knight of the Thistle. His family dates back to Gilbert de Nevill, an admiral to William the Conqueror. The Nevills have occupied many high stations including positions as Lord Chancellor and Archbishops. They have been friends to many monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth I, who visited Eridge Castle, the family seat, for 6 days in 1573. Many other works by Thomas Henwood, including a picture of Eridge Castle, appear in the Reverand T Horsfield's book. Thomas Henwood was an artist based in Lewes and painted portraits, country seats, local events and animals. He also has a works Lords Cricket Ground and 3 at the Science Museum.
