Gurinder Chadha

(1960-), Film director and journalist

Born in Kenya, Chadha came to England with her parents and was brought up in Southall, West London. She studied at the University of East Anglia and started her career as a news reporter for BBC Radio and made a documentary for Channel 4 and the BFI entitled I'm British But ... (1990). Best known for her film Bhajhi on the Beach (1993). Her most commercially successful film to date, Bend it like Beckham (2002), portrayed an Asian girl's ambition to be a footballer whilst accommodating her family's more traditional expectations for her future. Bride and Prejudice (2004) attempted to make a Bollywood epic out of Jane Austen's novel.
