Edward Thomas Demby

Demby was an African-American bishop and author. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Demby was extremely well educated, attending prestigious colleges and University's. He completed his studies at Howard University (Washington), D.C. Wilberforce University (Ohio) and the University of Chicago. Ordained in 1894 as an African Methodist Episcopal Church minister, he was confirmed in the Episcopal Church. Demby became a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Arkansas, and was the first African American to become bishop. Demby constantly fought racial discrimination and sought full recognition of African Americans within the Episcopal Church, promoting interracial harmony between his congregation and in wider society.
