Farington and Dance visited Strawberry Hill on 13 July 1793, when Farington recorded that ‘in the forenoon Mr Dance made a drawing of [Walpole’s] profile an excellent resemblance. – Lord Orford is now in his 76th year, infirm in his body, but lively & attentive in mind'. On 29 April 1794 Farington wrote that Walpole was ‘much mortified’ to learn that Dance’s drawing was on public exhibition, ‘thinking it wd. appear at his time of life an instance of vanity’, but the report was false.
A version of NPG 1161, inscribed This is by George Dance from the collection of Miss M. Dance the great granddaughter, [1] is in the Lewis Walpole Library, Farmington. A copy of Daniell’s engraving by J. T. Smith was sold Sotheby’s, 11 February 1971, lot 197.
