Hockney studied at the Bradford School of Art (1953-1957) and the Royal College of Art (1959-62) with R.B. Kitaj, Allen Jones and Derek Boshier. Graduating with a gold medal, he became a leading figure in the Pop Art movement. His first retrospective was at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 1970. He has worked as a painter, printmaker, illustrator, stage designer, photographer and writer. Hockney Paints the Stage was the first comprehensive study of his theatre work. In 1999 he began hundreds of portrait drawings using camera lucida, publishing his research on the subject in 2001. More recently Hockney has used iPad apps to draw a series of still-lives and landscapes, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 2012.
